Aecon/SNC-Lavalin joint venture earns $400M Bruce nuclear contract
A joint venture between Aecon Group and SNC-Lavalin has been awarded a $400-million contract to perform further work at the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station.
Shoreline Power Group is the partnership between the two companies and United Engineers & Constructors Inc. The group announced on December 17 that it has been awarded a second fuel channel and feeder replacement (FCFR) contract, for Bruce Power's Unit 3.
In 2018, the joint venture signed a preferred supplier agreement for FCFR work at the plant's remaining five units as part of the Bruce Major Component Replacement program. With the award of Unit 3, there are four units remaining.
"This new refurbishment work on Unit 3 is a continued vote of confidence by Bruce Power in our abilities as the OEM and steward of CANDU nuclear technology," said Sandy Taylor, President, Nuclear, SNC-Lavalin. "We will continue to leverage our deep technical knowledge base, decades of CANDU experience and innovation to confidently fulfill the refurbishment needs for this reactor as we have been doing now for several years on Unit 6.''
The scope of work under this latest contract involves all necessary planning and execution activities for the reactor refurbishment. Preparatory work for the outage scheduled for 2023 is expected to begin early next year. Once the outage occurs, the team will remove and replace the reactor related components: 480 fuel channels and calandria tubes and 960 end fittings. The construction team will also remove and replace 980 feeder pipes targeting a project completion in 2026.
"We are proud of the progress that has been made by Shoreline Power Group to successfully execute FCFR work on Unit 6, and the award of Unit 3 further strengthens our long-term partnership with Bruce Power to continue advancing the MCR program," said Aecon Group President and CEO Jean-Louis Servranckx. "We look forward to working with Bruce Power and our partners to deliver this important project safely and with unwavering execution performance."
