Province funds fourth new school in North Oakville
The provincial government has announced nearly $21 million in funding to support the construction of a new public school in Oakville.
Area MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos announced the funding on December 21. The money will be used by the Halton District School Board to build a still-unnamed facility that will accommodate 788 student spaces, 88 new licenced childcare spaces, and five new childcare rooms.
“The new Oakville NE #3 Public School is great news for our community,” said Triantafilopoulos. “788 new student spaces and 88 new childcare spaces will provide choice and flexibility for families and new opportunities for the children of Northeast Oakville.”
Since 2018, the province has earmarked $96.2 million for the construction of four schools in Oakville North-Burlington. The money will be spent on building two public elementary schools, one Catholic elementary school, one public high school and an expansion to a French Catholic school.
The projects will create a total of 3,615 spaces for students and 176 childcare spaces.
“Rapid growth in north Oakville has meant too many students being bussed long distances out of their community or having to learn in portables,” said Triantafilopoulos. “Today’s announcement is the fourth new school in just three years that our government has delivered for our community.”
The announcement is part of a broader investment of more than $600 million to support new school and childcare spaces. The overall investment will support 78 school and childcare related projects. As part of this investment, the province dedicated more than $565 million to create more than 19,700 new student spaces and 1,500 childcare spaces at schools across the province.
“In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have made safer schools a priority, which is why we continue to invest in modern and accessible learning spaces with improved ventilation,” said Education Minister Stephen Lecce. “This investment is part of our multiyear plan to build, expand, and update schools and childcare spaces across our province. It will leave a lasting legacy that benefits working families for years to come.”
The investment is part of the Ontario government’s commitment to provide $14 billion to support school construction over ten years. There are currently more than 300 childcare and education building-related projects in development across Ontario with more than 100 actively under construction.
