Construction loses 45,000 jobs in January: ADP report
The national jobs market took a beating in January, according to data released by ADP Canada.
The company’s National Employment Report for the month shows a loss of more than 231,000 jobs for the month—including more than 45,000 shed from the construction industry.
The report, which is derived from payroll data of companies served by ADP, measures the change in total nonfarm payroll employment each month on a seasonally-adjusted basis. As many as two million workers are counted in the survey
“January reported a decrease in jobs, the largest decrease since May 2020 during the lockdown period,” said Nela Richardson, chief economist, ADP. “The surge in COVID-19 cases and public health restrictions resulted in mass layoffs. Job losses were reported in every sector, led by trade, transportation and utilities, leisure and hospitality, and construction.”
