Latest Lakeview plan gets OK from Mississauga council
Mississauga City Council has given the thumbs-up to the latest phase in an ambitious project to develop a 177-acre site on its Lakeview community.
Council endorsed the Lakeview Development Recommendation Report, a document that supports the draft plan of subdivision, rezoning and Official Plan amendment applications, and establishes the land uses for the former Lakeview Power Generating Station site.
“We’re one step closer to transforming our waterfront into a world-class destination rivalling Stockholm, Chicago and San Francisco,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “Our waterfront will attract a new generation to Mississauga with liveable, walkable communities connecting the lakeshore from east to west. From a cultural district with spaces for artists to showcase their work, to an Innovation Corridor with over 9,000 skilled jobs, the Lakeview Development will revitalize our city.”
Details of the plan call for 8,050 residential units, including over 400 affordable units, 180,000 square feet of commercial space, 67 acres of waterfront land dedicated to parks, employment and cultural use, 14 acres of employment lands, and 1.5 million square feet of employment space.
The approval is the latest step in the multi-year project. In the next phase, developers Lakeview Community Partners Limited will submit site-plan applications for individual blocks within the development. That second submission is targeted for next May, and if approved quickly, could lead to servicing work at the site beginning next summer, and construction proper starting in the fall.
“The proposed development fulfills our vision for a vibrant, green, mixed-use waterfront community,” said city manager and chief administrative officer Paul Mitcham. “With Lakeview and developments across the city, we are moving forward, building a beautiful global and sustainable city with economic and cultural opportunities, active transportation and transit options as well as great public spaces that together are creating strong and connected communities.”
The Lakeview Waterfront is one of Mississauga’s three key redevelopment waterfront projects along with Port Credit West Village and 1 Port Street.
