Metrolinx targets 12 Hamilton buildings for demolition
Metrolinx has targeted 12 more properties across downtown Hamilton that will need to be demolished to make way for construction of the city’s light rail line.
The provincial transit authority revealed the list of properties on its website on October 12. The buildings tipped for demolition are both vacant and owned by Metrolinx.
The demolition plan, says Metrolinx, “will ensure community safety and prepare for future construction, as the demolition will reduce the risk of fire, vandalism and illegal activities in these properties.”
One of the buildings is located on Paisley Avenue South, three are on Main Street West and the remaining eight are on King Street East.
Metrolinx says it aims to start demolition work the corridor as early as November, pending permit approvals. Utility disconnections already underway.
In the coming years, these properties will be required for station stops, infrastructure, and widening to accommodate the future LRT right of way. In the short term, demolition sites will be restored, secured with fencing and monitored by security contractors. The transit authority is already working with demolition subcontractors and the City of Hamilton to ensure safety around the sites.
Demolition of buildings along the Hamilton LRT corridor is already well underway. Metrolinx commissioned the removal of 21 buildings earlier this year. A further two at the intersection of Main and Kenilworth were also recently demolished.
Early works construction in the form of utility relocations is expected to begin in spring 2022 and procurement on the main construction contract for the Hamilton LRT could start this winter.
