Skills Ontario hosts programming for International Day of the Girl
Skills Ontario is hosting a series of events in October to celebrate the International Day of the Girl, and encourage young women to consider careers in the trades.
The series kicks off on October 4 with a series of work-at-home skills challenges in five skilled-trades and technology sectors. They include building a tower out of marshmallows and toothpicks, building a model playground out of popsicle sticks, and building a sail car. Other challenges focus on skills in fashion design and coding.
On October 11, Skills Ontario will host a special workshop where participants and their family members will use Google Slides or PowerPoint to create a short promotional video.
In the third part of the series, Skills Ontario will host a For Girls, By Girls! virtual conference. During the event, girls in elementary and senior elementary schools will discuss their perspectives of how they perceive the skilled trades and technologies, what they want to be when they grow up and why, what their favourite tool is, what they think certain trades actually do, and what interests them.
The event will also include keynote messages from several industry leaders, including apprentice Kyara Cabrera Fong from Auto Body & Collision Repair.
The International Day of the Girl was established by the United Nations in 2012 and is recognized as a day to acknowledge girls and their rights, education, and opportunities.
More information about the programming is available on the Skills Ontario website.
