Construction of Peterborough community centre to start next month
The Town of Peterborough has announced that construction of its new community centre will start next month.
The recreational hub will be located at the southeast corner of Lansdowne and Park streets in Morrow Park. The building will include a twin-pad arena and Peterborough Public Library branch, as well as an indoor walking track and multi-purpose spaces.
The design also prepares for Phase 2 of the project, which is not currently budgeted or approved, for an aquatic centre that would add an indoor pool to the facility for both community and competitive uses.
This fall, general contractor Ball Construction plans to stage equipment and materials, erect fencing around the work area, install tree protection, and begin site preparation work, and in-ground construction for the building.
Construction is anticipated to be completed by fall 2024.
"Our new community centre is a much-needed project anticipated by many community members with multiple uses included for all ages. A major silver lining is the addition of a new library branch to replace the outdated DelaFosse building. All conveniently located as a hub for local citizens and sports tourism,” said Councillor Lesley Parnell, chair of the Arenas, Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee.
“This project is essential and long overdue. While the path to get to this point has been challenging, it has also presented new opportunities. Adding a Peterborough Public Library branch to the facility enhances its role as a hub for the broader community,” said Mayor Diane Therrien.
City Council approved the location for the new community centre in July 2021. The project has been through several stages of studies, community engagement, and approvals over several years.
A planned reconstruction of a section of Lansdowne Street West that runs next to Morrow Park is being timed to align with the construction of the new community centre.
