PCL completes Ontario's first Accelerated Build LTC home project
After just 13 months, Infrastructure Ontario and its various partners have completed construction of a new long-term care home in Ajax.
Dubbed Lakeridge Gardens, the new facility is located next to Ajax Pickering Hospital. The six-storey, 273,000-square foot building includes 320 beds, a nine-station dialysis unit, and a modern design that prioritizes residents’ quality of life.
The building, which was built by PCL Constructors for Lakeridge Health, achieved substantial completion on March 2.
“Lakeridge Gardens’ progress over the last year, and especially in the last few weeks, has been a remarkable achievement,” said Lakeridge Health President and CEO Cynthia Davis. “Our partnerships with PCL Construction, Infrastructure Ontario, local and provincial governments, the Durham Region community, and countless other skilled workers, tradespeople, and team members made this possible.”
The project was delivered under the province’s new Accelerated Build pilot program which deploys such techniques as modular construction, rapid procurement and the use of hospital lands to deliver long-term care projects in far less time than conventional builds.
At the peak of work on the Ajax project, PCL and its team deployed just over 600 skilled workers daily.
To showcase the collaboration behind the project and to provide insight into the strategy that enabled the home to be built in months instead of years, PCL Construction released a short documentary about the project along with a complementary timeline.
“Collaboration is key to success on any project, but the outcomes achieved on the Lakeridge Health Accelerated Build project truly personify what strong partnerships can achieve,” said Marc Pascoli, Vice President and District Manager, PCL Constructors Canada Inc.
The home is scheduled to open in late March.
