Georgian College receives $7.5M from the City of Barrie
The City of Barrie has provided Georgian College with $7.5 million in funding to build a new facility.
Sited directly across from City Hall in the Barrie City Centre, the planned building will offer a hub of creative programming in areas such as design, visual arts and emerging innovative technologies.
The college says the building will enable it to welcome up to 1,000 students.
“This is an investment in our city’s future,” said Mayor Alex Nuttall. “Georgian’s new location will be a cornerstone of downtown revitalization, attract new faces and energy, and fuel long-term growth in our downtown core.”
In addition to the city’s investment, the project will be funded through one-time capital reserves and fundraising efforts. Georgian is also seeking partners to support student success through innovative and sustainable collaborations.
“This is a monumental step forward for our institution and the community,” said college President and CEO Kevin Weaver. “Our new downtown location will offer cutting-edge facilities, strengthen our connection to the city, and provide students with immersive, real-world learning opportunities.”
Georgian expects to welcome students into the new space in September 2026.
