Brampton brick manufacturer fined for 2023 workplace fatality
A Brampton brick manufacturer has been fined $225,000 in connection with an incident that led to a workplace fatality in 2023.
Brampton Brick Limited pled guilty to a violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act in provincial court. The company will also pay a 25-percent victim fine surcharge.
The incident occurred on June 8, 2023 at the company’s manufacturing facility at 10828 Hurontario Street in Brampton.
On the day of the incident, a worker was helping to remove cement build-up on equipment.
The worker climbed onto a mud conveyor in the plant’s mixer area while carrying a hammer.
The worker was unaware that a skip hoist, a device for lifting materials, was in automatic mode and the hoist bucket itself was overhead.
When the hoist automatically engaged, the hoist bucket lowered resulting in a fatal injury.
An investigation by the Ministry of Labor, Immigration, Training and Skills Development found that the mixer area was not equipped with adequate machine guarding.
