Northern Transformer Corporation starts construction on Innisfill manufacturing facility
Power transformer manufacturer Northern Transformer Corporation has announced the start of construction work on a new manufacturing facility in Innisfill.
The $207-million investment is expected to create more than 150 jobs, and fill a gap in the province’s energy supply chain.
“With this new facility, we are expanding our footprint in Ontario to meet the rising demand for mission-critical Large Power Transformers for our North American utility clients,” said CEO Alexei Miecznikowski. “This investment not only boosts our production capacity and technical capabilities, but also drives job creation, innovation, and supply chain growth in the region.”
The company received a grant of $6 million through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, and further investment of $10.5 million through the Invest Ontario Fund, subject to a definitive agreement.
The 183,000-square-foot facility is purpose-built for the manufacture and testing of high voltage large power transformers ranging from 230 to 500 kV class with power handling capability up to 750 MVA.
Located on a rail-accessible site, the facility will enable efficient shipments to project sites across North America. It will feature ultra-clean manufacturing environments with temperature and humidity controls, large-scale winding and assembly equipment, and a fully isolated, extra-high voltage testing laboratory.
Northern Transformer is working with Baldassarra Architects and Metrus Construction to deliver the facility.
Operations are anticipated to begin in 2028.
