Governments commit $3B to Toronto’s Waterfront East Transit project
Alongside their joint announcement to help cut development charge costs on new housing, the federal and provincial governments announced an agreement to advance a key piece of transit infrastructure along Toronto’s eastern waterfront.
Waterfront East Transit will extend rail service out to the city’s Port Lands at the new island called Ookwemin Minising. The project is expected to support approximately 75,000 homes, and accommodate over 50,000 daily riders.
All three levels of government, including the City of Toronto, will contribute $975 million to the project.
Waterfront East Transit is expected to create more than 100,000 jobs and generate more than $13.2 billion in economic value, delivering lasting economic impact locally, provincially, and nationally.
“Waterfront East Transit is about building the future of Toronto,” said Mayor Olivia Chow. “The city has shown leadership by investing in the design of the Waterfront East Transit and working closely with our federal and provincial partners to move it forward. This announcement will unlock new homes, connect people to jobs, and support communities along the eastern waterfront.”
The project is expected to come into service by 2032.
