Pomerleau awarded contract for Stevenson Hospital redevelopment
Infrastructure Ontario and The Stevenson Memorial Hospital have awarded a contract worth $174 million to Pomerleau to deliver phase one of the Stevenson Memorial Hospital Redevelopment Project in Alliston.
The project involves the construction of a new L-shaped expansion that will be adjacent to the existing hospital. At approximately 147,100 square feet, this expansion will house clinical specialties such as the emergency department, laboratory, surgical suite, and birthing unit. The project also includes significant site regrading and implementing new traffic flow and utility connections, while the existing hospital maintains operations.
"The expansion of the Stevenson Memorial Hospital is an important component to addressing the healthcare needs of Ontarians," said Sean Smithson, Pomerleau's Regional Vice President. "We are proud to partner with Infrastructure Ontario and the team at the Stevenson Memorial Hospital to deliver a safe, modern facility that will help the community access the critical care they need when they need it."
The original 1964 design of the hospital facility was intended to manage 7,000 visits per year. More recently, the hospital has seen nearly 40,000 visits annually, with the increase in visits being driven by the increase in population and aging of the surrounding community.
The redevelopment project will allow Stevenson Memorial Hospital to increase inpatient bed capacity by 20 percent and will triple the square footage of the existing hospital.
Pomerleau will mobilize on site in March, with construction expected to begin shortly thereafter. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2028.
The project is being delivered using a design-bid-build model.
