Ottawa-area sheet-metal manufacturer fined $50,000 in connection with workplace injury
An Ottawa-area sheet-metal manufacturer has been fined $50,000 in connection with an incident that led to a workplace injury.
Triway Sheet Metal Inc. pled guilty in provincial court to a violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. In addition to the fine, the company will pay a 25-percent surcharge that is credited to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime.
The incident occurred in August 2024 at the company’s facility in Carp, west of Ottawa.
A worker tripped while walking past a mechanical brake press, an industrial machine used to bend and form sheet metal.
As the worker fell, they inadvertently activated the pedal that initiates the brake, and their attempt to brace the fall resulted in contact with the brake mechanism, causing critical injuries.
At the time of the incident, the worker was wearing personal protective equipment.
Triway Sheet Metal was found to have failed to ensure that a machine with an exposed moving part that could endanger a worker was equipped with a guard to prevent access to the moving part.
