Construction reaches finishing stages on Whitby sports complex
The Town of Whitby has announced that construction on its Fieldgate Sports Complex has reached several major milestones, with work now moving into the finishing phases.
The project team has completed major structural work and is now focused on interior finishes, bringing the recreation hub closer to opening in 2026.
The key construction milestones include:
- The completion of roofing and stonework, including the installation of hundreds of solar panels to support the project’s LEED Gold and Zero Carbon Building goals.
- The facility’s arenas are 90 percent complete, with radiant heating built directly into the seating.
- The installation of the building’s exterior panels is 80 percent complete, with full completion expected in March.
- The multi-purpose gymnasium is 80 percent complete, with drywall and painting underway and flooring installation to begin in March.
- Work on the lobby is 70 percent complete, with drywall and painting underway and flooring expected to be complete in May.
- The aquatics area is 65 percent complete, with waterproofing underway and tile work set to begin in March.
“This facility has truly been built by the community, for the community to support Whitby’s growth — with inclusive, accessible, and flexible spaces that will serve residents for generations,” said Matt Gaskell, Whitby’s Chief Administrative Officer.
The complex is located on the west side of Baldwin Street South, just south of Highway 407. Once it opens, it will serve as a year-round destination for sport and recreation, the town says.
Nearly 3,000 residents and community partners provided feedback to inform the facility’s design.
