York1 proposes Mississauga C&D recycling facility
A waste management company is proposing to build a new recycling facility for construction and demolition waste in Mississauga.
York1 Environmental Waste Solutions Ltd. aims to build the facility at 580 Hazelhurst Rd., an industrial area near Winston Churchill Boulevard and Lakeshore Road, according to a report submitted to the City of Mississauga.
The company recycles and repurposes recoverable construction and demolition materials, and operates several recyclable materials processing and transfer facilities throughout southern Ontario.
The proposed Mississauga plant will in part, produce alternative low carbon fuel (ALCF). ALCF is a sustainable, recycled product, produced from construction and demolition wood waste and is used as a replacement for coal. Typical users of ALCF are steel mills and cement factories. ALCF is recognized as a "green" fuel and enables the issuance of carbon credits to users of ALCF.
The new facility would be located next door to the Ash Grove cement manufacturing plant, which would be the primary recipient of the ALCF produced at this location.
The plant currently uses coal and petroleum coke as a primary fuel source, meaning ALCF would lead to a direct reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The use of ALCF diverts waste from landfill, recovers resources from this waste and provides a low carbon alternative to coal.
As well, the Mississauga location provides significant emission reductions relating to both transport of construction and demolition waste generated in Mississauga to distant landfills and importation of coal from far-off mines.
