The city is calling the work a “generational infrastructure project” with the potential to protect the community from flooding and drive new housing growth.

It’s part of a growing trend across the country of First Nations looking to build their own capacity and bring prosperity to their communities.

Marten Falls First Nation will receive nearly $40 million for a multi-purpose community centre, materials for other infrastructure projects, and other priority projects.

The project is expected to create more than 30,000 jobs during the refurbishment and maintain 6,700 jobs during its operation.

The city’s investment of $300 million will help create up to 400 new residential units as part of the Caron Avenue and Riverside Drive West Developments.
